Analysis and Optimization of the Value Chain of Ricinodendron heudelotii in Benin
This research project focuses on the valorization of a high-potential non-timber forest product: Ricinodendron heudelotii, commonly known as Akpi in Benin. Despite its well-documented nutritional, medicinal, and industrial properties, this species remains significantly underutilized in the country. To date, few studies have addressed the structuring of its value chain in a comprehensive manner.
The main gap lies in the lack of a detailed mapping and in-depth understanding of the R. heudelotii value chain in Benin — particularly regarding the actors involved, their interactions, and the distribution of added value. This research aims to fill that gap by mapping and analyzing all stages of the value chain, while identifying technical constraints, socio-economic dynamics, and opportunities for improvement. Special attention is given to the inclusion of women and youth, who play a key yet often overlooked role in the sector.
This PhD project, conducted as part of the ARES-PRD WILDSEED-OIL program, is carried out by Aurel Loïc Mahougnon Hounkpatin (2024–2028).
